Background/rationale

The sequence of emergency total hepatectomy followed by anhepatic state awaiting urgent liver transplantation has been reported for fulminant liver failure, massive hepatic trauma, and primary graft failure. In these life-threatening situations emergency hepatectomy is the only way to stop any further deterioration. As soon as a suitable graft becomes available, super urgent liver transplantation is performed but evidence on this procedure is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to provide the available evidence.

Objectives

The objective of this study is to provide a worldwide meaningful cohort study describing the practiced indications and analyzing risk factors for life-saving bridging to transplant. The study should help guiding transplant surgeons while awaiting for urgent liver transplantation.
