Summary:
Background/rationale
Knowledge of individual liver anatomy is essential for preoperative planning in liver surgery.
Three-dimensional reconstruction of preoperative Imaging enhances surgical planning and
improves surgical outcomes.
Structured educational tools for the comprehension of liver anatomy are lacking. A virtual
training tool (The Liver Shelf) has been developed to support residents in training. The Liver
Shelf is a multi-user immersive virtual-reality application with anonymized complex liver
surgical cases, from the University Medical Center Mainz. Each case consists of an interactive
three-dimensional liver model enhanced with clinical data and amended with the two-
dimensional DICOM data of the preoperative cross sectional imaging. (Fig. 1) The Liver Shelf
offers the opportunity to login via a remote desktop computer with the ability to interact with
the models, however without the immersive experience.
